why it was built

the problem

A family member operates greenhouses and their indeterminate tomato plants—a variety that should remain productive for well over a year under proper management—were dying at just six to seven months, with yields dropping even earlier. The root cause was a total lack of monitoring. Without data on soil or atmospheric conditions, daily tasks like watering and fertilizing were executed entirely on guesswork. Digging deeper, I discovered this wasn't an isolated problem. Across Mexico, a vast number of small-scale agricultural businesses operate completely devoid of agritech. The barrier to entry boils down to two major issues: a severe lack of financial resources and software options that are far too complicated for the average farmer to navigate.

what is being built

the approach

I decided to help mediate these problems by building a platform that is both monetarily and technologically accessible to farmers. To start out with, four major metrics will be measured: soil humidity, soil electrical conductivity, soil pH, and atmospheric temperature. The system will trigger a notification directly to the farmer if any of the readings taken fall out of optimal range. This will allow the farmer to see the day-to-day conditions of their land to make better decisions when deciding when to water, when to fertilize, and what type of fertilizer to use based on the type of crop. This will save them time, money, and help yield bigger and better harvests.

Recognizing that complex digital systems often alienate agricultural workers, I structured the platform around a high-touch, managed-service delivery model offered only to the surrounding areas. Phase one relies on a localized deployment where my team handles manual data collection and analysis directly on-site. As we transition the infrastructure to offer continuous 24-hour hardware monitoring, we maintain absolute ownership over system maintenance and technical calibration if the farmer decides to go implement it. This proactive, boots-on-the-ground presence ensures a zero-friction user experience for the farmer, provides unmatched quality control over our environmental data, and establishes a premium layer of customer care that many traditional software-only vendors fail to deliver.

current status

where it stands today

Currently, the platform exists as a fully functional working demo. The immediate next phase centers on building and deploying a physical sensor prototype inside an operational greenhouse. This field-testing will begin as a manual proof of concept, with data readings taken by hand several times a day to validate accuracy. Once the core hardware is optimized, I will integrate cellular connectivity to transition the architecture into an automated, continuous 24-hour monitoring system.
